MAD MARCH, A SURVIVORS GUIDE

It’s that time of year where little old Adelaide gets to shine. The festival season is upon us and Mad March is all anyone can talk about. The music gets louder and more varied, The SuperLoop 500 has racing fans flock from all over, the Fringe Festival brings comedy funnier and burlesque sexier than ever, and the pop up bar scene is born in sleepy little side streets to accommodate the masses and this is all just the start. The “City of Churches” becomes a worshipping ground for quality entertainment and it is an experience not to miss. If this is all new to you, the below brings you a few tried and tested tips to surviving it all.

#1 MAKE RESERVATIONS

Should this be for your hotel stay, dinner and cocktails to die for or your must see shows, reserve your spots in advance where you can to avoid disappointment. There really is nothing worse than missing out on a limited ticket show or your fave hotel in the centre of it all because there is no availability left. Local businesses wait all year to be bursting at the seams during this time so book in and secure your spot!

#2 DO YOUR RESEARCH

Know why you are here and what you want to experience. If it is sheer luck that you get to experience this amazing city during this time for your travels or business, then grab a quick education of what is around and milk it for what it is worth. Take your time in finding out what is on that fits in with your timeframe, budget and your style of entertainment and you will wish you decided to spend more time here. There are multiple options to find all info you need, websites pop up early on, printed guides are in every hotel lobby, cafe and pub and this leads on nicely to tip #3

#3 DOWNLOAD THE APPS or DIGITAL GUIDES

If you are tech savvy and have any kind of smart device, APPS and DG’s will be your BFF. If you want to go down to the Garden of Unearthly Delights on a whim, or find yourself capable of some last minute adult only time, you can see what is on at the push of a button as you are already on route to Gluttony, APPS are free to download and as well as giving real-time reviews and availability, also put out some great deals and discounts. Ones to look out for are Womadelaide2019 by appmagic, Gluttony, and Adelaide Fringe Digital Guide at adelaidefringe.com.au/digital-guide.

#4 EMBRACE THE CROWDS

Be prepared for the masses, for standing in queues ( it’s all totally worth it ) and to navigate pathways to your destination around the gathering congregations. Public transport will be busy and traffic slow with some roads being completely shut down but walking from spot to spot alongside other Mad Marchers and taking in the atmosphere genuinely adds to the experience. If a bit of downtime and a quiet drink or bite to eat during any of this is what you crave, use us locals to recommend somewhere we know you will love!

#5 BE OPEN TO ALL WE HAVE TO OFFER

So many new, exciting and different things to experience is what makes this time of the year so magnificent – no matter who you are, where you are from and what your tastes are, there will no doubt be something that will appeal to your fun side. Have a take no prisoners attitude to walking a little on the wild side and trying something outside of your comfort zone, you’ll be amazed at the fun you’ll have and the stories you’ll be able to tell.

Whatever your reasons for travelling to Adelaide during this time, I guarantee Mad March will have you begging for more and returning to our not so sleepy village in the years to come!

Happy March-ing people, maybe I’ll see a few of you out there J
